Connecticut Prepares for Hurricane with Random Acts of Kindness
Some things bring out the worst in human nature, but the anticipated arrival of a hurricane is not one of those things when it comes to the Stop & Shop grocery store in Cheshire, CT!
Everyone was busy this morning thinking about how to prepare for what could be a hurricane or could be a long day of rain and wind on Sunday. My wife headed out to the Cheshire Stop and Shop to see if water could be found. We have a well for our water, so if the electricity goes out, we will not have running water. We will be filling the tub for certain necessities, but it would be nice to have fresh drinking water!
She came home with stories of Random Acts of Kindness. People from all walks of life and all ages were in the store--it looked like the day before Thanksgiving! Most everyone was cheerful and more than willing to help as the elderly needed help picking up a heavy bottle of water or a child tried to reach a high shelf for the item that his mother had sent him back to fetch.
One woman was purchasing water for her elderly neighbor who lives alone and doesn't get out. An elderly gentleman got into a long line with just a few items to purchase, so the ladies in the self checkout offered to let him get in their line. When he explained that he had no idea how to use that "new-fangled machine," they showed him by letting him go first and telling him where to insert his money when he was done.
So as you make your plans to have a hurricane party or to hunker down and read all day, be sure to remember others who might need a little help or encouragement during this storm that is heading our way!
