I have Never Met a Viking Ship I didn't Like!
Okay, so maybe I only met one. This one was the Royal Warship Vasa. How could I possibly like a warship that's purpose was to kill? Well, the Vasa capsized on her maiden voyage in August 1628 and never once fired her guns on the enemy. It went straight to the bottom of Stockholm Harbor having traveled less than one nautical mile. In 1961 the Vasa was raised from the harbor floor and given her very own museum (Vasa Museum). The following pictures were taken at the museum. Please keep in mind that we were not allowed to use flash photography, so these photos have been lightened on the computer.
Oh man this is amazing! Thats called an antique! I love the wood work and amazing ingenuity that we had back then...even if it was spurred by war.
Wow! To think they built something this great before power tools...amazing! It reminds me of the ship in the "Goonies" movie...
Hi - At almost 400 years old, I guess that would qualify for an antique pretty solidly! Can you imagine sailing off in something so beautiful that could be blown apart (instead it was blown down by winds).
Hi Brenda - I know--everything done by hand. The time it took is inconceivable!
Hi Chris, How positively wonderful and thank you so much for bringing these to us. Very much appreciated for sure! I am going back now to spend some time really looking at them in detail.
Hi Chrsi, These may be some of the most exciting photos eve on ActiveRain. Love them. I am going to hit the suggest button , doubt it does any good but who knows, one the post moderators may be still be awake, LOL.
Hi William - I am glad that you enjoyed these that much--I know I certainly enjoyed seeing them in person! Thanks for the Suggest!
Chris,
What an exquisite ship... fantastic detail. It would have probably never been possible for me to see this ship other than your photos. Thanks so much for sharing this with us... amazing!!!
Hi Linda - And some of the photos I took didn't come out due to not being able to use a flash (in a very dark setting)--this ship was an amazing sight!! Glad you enjoyed it!
Chris,
Fabulous job of lightening the photos. They look great. :)_
Steve
Hi Steve - Thanks! They were rather "mystery photos" before the lightening happened! : )
Interesting history lesson. Thanks for sharing the photographs.
Hi Roy - Thanks for stopping by. The Vasa Museum was a fascinating place!
